Mountain Lion Not Domesticated |
Callaway County (AP),
8/14/2003 |
State conservation
officials now believe the male cougar that was hit by a car in
Callaway County this week was not someone's pet. Conservation
biologists say an autopsy showed no indications of an animal that
had been caged. The cougar's stomach contained a single gray
squirrel, which experts say indicates it was feeding in the
wild.
It also was missing a pad on one of its paws.
Investigators believe the animal may have lost the pad in a fight
with another cougar, or possibly a bear.
So where did the
cougar come from? Conservation officials believe the animal migrated
to central Missouri from the west in search of an area not dominated
by other male mountain lions. |
