ECN Update - August 28, 2003
SDGF&P has provided ECN with five well
documented incidents of cougar presence
far to the east of the cat's known range in
SD. All occurred subsequent to October 1998.
Three from the southeastern portion of the state
were relatively close to the Minnesota, Iowa
and Nebraska borders (in counties of the Minnehaha, Charles Mix & Yankton).
One of the
reports qualifies as a "confirmation" under ECN's criteria, the other four are
"Probables".
Several other very credible reports were submitted, but they were not verified by hard evidence. Unfortunately, the state did not maintain a central database of verified reports prior to the year 2000, so we were unable to obtain data from the 1990's.
