GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Coordinates data collection, management, and research primarily for mountain lions, but also for black bears and wolves with regional personnel, Wyoming COOP, and other state and federal agencies. Coordinates grizzly bear data collection, research, and management programs with Trophy Game Coordinator, Regional personnel and other state and federal agencies. Participates in collection and analysis of trophy game species population data for use in population trend, harvest management programs, identifying seasonally important habitats and identifying or mitigating environmental impacts. Develops and maintains appropriate databases and GIS systems. Maintains extensive presence in the field during the trapping season. Data collection by both ground and aerial methods (helicopter or small single engine fixed wing aircraft) is required. Develops and presents Information and Education programs. Prepares year‑end reports. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with local Game and Fish employees, other state and federal agency personnel, local landowners, sportspersons and wildlife organizations. Assist with budget development to assure that necessary tasks are completed within fiscal limits. May serve as a liaison for the Department, which may include serving on graduate student committees, reviewing proposed research projects of interest to the Department, collaborating with University and independent researchers to initiate applied research projects. Supervise up to 4 temporary or contract positions. This position is required to possess and utilize 4 department horses in the District assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Coordinates with and provides comments to county governments, state and federal agencies and private landowners on projects that may impact trophy game populations by recommending alternatives and mitigation. Projects include, but aren't limited to, timber management, other habitat management activities, highway development or improvement, grazing systems, oil and gas and mineral development, pipelines and power lines, and rural subdivisions. Assist with budget preparation. Prepares and submits routine monthly reports, fiscal documents, planning documents, and budget requests as required. Assist with interviewing applicants for contract employment. Equipment maintenance. Contributes ideas, problem solutions and strategies to improve section and Department operations. Assist with development of Wyoming Game & Fish Dept., strategic plan and other planning documents designed to meet future of trophy game species needs. Represents the Wyoming Game & Fish Dept., at public meetings. Lecture to various public groups and other state and federal agencies regarding agency and section programs, activities, and objectives. Respond to public requests for information and reports. Provide appropriate training to Wyoming Game & Fish Dept. and other agency personnel as required. Attend Wyoming Game & Fish Dept. or other sponsored training sessions in order to keep current with techniques and issues of importance in the management of trophy game species.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of the principles of trophy game species data collection and conservation. Computer skills and ability to learn new software packages including knowledge of Microsoft, statistical applications, various home range applications, and ARC View software. Knowledge of general outdoor skills including use of horses. Knowledge of requirements for preparing reports, personnel management, and functions and structure of other agencies. Well‑developed communication skills, written and oral. Able to work independently or with other people, agencies or groups with little direct supervision. Excellent physical condition and ability to work outside, often for long periods on foot, often in severe weather conditions. Ability to collect, analyze and interpret long‑ and short‑term data sets. Ability to successfully negotiate positive outcomes for trophy game species. Ability to collect data from various types of aircraft. Ability to make decisions under difficult circumstances. Must be able to accurately convey Wyoming Game & Fish Dept. policy and goals to public and other agencies. Willing to work irregular hours and travel a great deal.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in wildlife management, range management, biology, zoology, ichthyology or closely related field, PLUS four years of professional work experience in wildlife or fish resource management, research or habitat development, enforcement of wildlife laws and regulations, OR a master's degree in wildlife management, biology, zoology, ichthyology, range management or closely related field, PLUS two years of professional work experience in wildlife or fish resource management, research or habitat development, enforcement of wildlife laws and regulations.
